Prendergast, Pirates Edge South Alabama, 3-2

PENSACOLA, FLA. – Senior Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) pitched seven strong innings as the Seton Hall baseball team edged South Alabama, 3-2, in its final game of the 2017 Cox Diamond Invitational on Sunday.
The Pirates offense broke through on South Alabama starter Zach Melton in the top of the third inning. Junior Al Molina (Freehold, N.J.) led off with a double to left-center field and Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) followed with a walk. With one out, Mike Caputo (Morganville, N.J.) walked to load the bases. Senior Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) also walked to force in Molina with the first run of the game. Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) followed with a two-RBI double to right field to give The Hall a 3-0 lead.
The Jaguars rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning and appeared poised to tie the score, but the Pirates' defense came through. The first three batters reached base, the third of which, drove in South Alabama's first run of the game and ended Prendergast's start. With Anthony Pacillo (Lyndhurst, N.J.) on in relief, the Jaguars cut the Pirate lead to 3-2 on an errant throw home on a sacrifice bunt attempt. With the tying run on third base and no outs with the bases loaded, Pacillo induced a ground ball to first base. Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) threw to second base for the force out and then Molina threw home to nail the runner at the plate. Although the runner was called safe at second, the Pirates preserved the lead with the out at home. Pacillo then picked off the runner at second, and struck out South Alabama's Wells Davis to end the threat.
Inside the Numbers:
- Ramiz went 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base and two RBIs.
- Prendergast improves to 2-0 with the victory after allowing only two runs over seven innings with four strikeouts and just one walk.
- Ryan Testani (Shelton, Conn.) kept the Jaguars off the scoreboard in the ninth inning to record his first career save.
- Fortin walked twice and had an RBI.
- Both Molina and Poduslenko went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a walk.
- Seton Hall left 10 men on base, while South Alabama left six.
- Poduslenko's seventh inning single was the 100th hit of his career.
- The victory is the 12th of Prendergast's career.
