Pirates' Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short, 2-1
4/2/2017 5:46:00 PM | Baseball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Shane McCarthy (Fair Haven, N.J.) allowed two unearned runs over 6.1 innings, but his offense stalled as the Seton Hall baseball team fell to LIU-Brooklyn, 2-1, on Sunday.
Trailing 2-0, Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) and Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) hit back-to-back singles to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning. With one out, junior Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) singled to right field to score pinch runner Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) with the Pirates' first run. However, pinch hitter Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) grounded into a double play to end the rally.
Twice, it appeared as though the Pirates scored runs only to be called out by umpires. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Alescio was called out on a play at the plate, which drew the ire of the Seton Hall dugout. With one out in the bottom of the sixth inning, Fortin hit a towering home run to left field, only to be called out for not touching the first base bag.
LIU-Brooklyn broke through in the top of the seventh inning with a pair of unearned runs off McCarthy.
Inside the Numbers:
- McCarthy took the loss with two unearned runs over 6.1 innings. He struck out seven batters and walked only one.
- Senior Ryan Testani (Shelton, Conn.) was again brilliant in relief, tossing 2.2 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out three batters.
- Alescio was the lone Pirate with multiple hits. He went 2-for-4 with two stolen bases and an RBI.
- Seton Hall left seven men on base, while LIU-Brooklyn left nine.
- Seton Hall falls to 26-10 all-time against LIU-Brooklyn.
Seton Hall will return to action on Wednesday, April 5 when it travels to Staten Island, N.Y. to face Wagner. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET.
