SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Six pitchers limited Saint Peter's to just three hits as the Seton Hall baseball team shut out the Peacocks, 11-0, on Wednesday for its sixth straight victory.
The Pirates did all the offensive damage they needed in the bottom of the second inning. The Hall sent 11 men to the plate and scored six runs on four hits and three Saint Peter's errors. With the Pirates already leading, 2-0, senior Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) clubbed his second career home run over the right field wall, a two-run shot, to extend the Pirates' lead to 4-0. Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) and Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) followed with RBI singles to cap the six-run outburst.
From there, the Pirates pitching staff took over. After Pirate starter Chris Morris (Matawan, N.J.) gave up a leadoff single in the second inning, Seton Hall pitchers retired 21 consecutive Peacocks until Ryan Testani (Shelton, Conn.) allowed a single to lead off the ninth inning.
Inside the Numbers:
- Morris earned the victory, allowing two hits over two innings with three strikeouts.
- Toke led the Pirates with three hits, going 3-for-5 with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.
- Sophomore Billy Layne, Jr. (Cliffwood Beach, N.J.) tossed two perfect innings of relief.
- Ramiz went 2-for-4 with a double, a run scored and three RBIs.
- Junior Andrew Politi (Long Valley, N.J.) pitched two perfect innings, including four strikeouts.
- Martin went 1-for-2 with a walk, a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs.
- Sophomore Matt Ponsiglione (Staten Island, N.Y.) tossed a perfect seventh inning.
- Junior Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) tossed a perfect eighth inning.
- Testani pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
- Seton Hall left five men on base, while Saint Peter's left four.
- It's the 19th time this season the Pirates have recorded at least 10 hits and the sixth game in a row.
- Junior Chris Talbott (Freehold, N.J.) still has a 1.000 career batting average after a sacrifice fly today.
- The Pirates improve to 7-0 when they score 10 or more runs.
- The Hall improves to 16-1 when leading after seven innings.
- Seton Hall improves to 39-7 all-time against Saint Peter's.
Seton Hall will return to action on Friday, April 28 when they begin a three-game series in Queens, N.Y. against St. John's. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
