Seton Hall Drops BIG EAST Opener to Butler, 6-2
4/7/2017 7:44:00 PM | Baseball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) had a strong outing in relief, but the Seton Hall baseball team dropped the BIG EAST opener to Butler, 6-2, on Friday.
Leon entered in relief of Seton Hall starter Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) and allowed only one hit over 2.2 innings with five strikeouts and no walks.
The Pirates got on the scoreboard first with a single run in the bottom of the third inning. Freshman Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.) led off the inning with a single through the right side and went from first-to-third on a wild pitch. With two outs, senior Matt Fortin (Nashua, N.H.) singled through the left side to give the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
Turning Point:
After Butler tied the game in the top of the fourth, they took the lead for good in the top of the fifth. Back-to-back one-out singles, aided by a Seton Hall error, plated the go-ahead run for the Bulldogs. The following inning, Butler broke the game open with three runs off Prendergast.
Inside the Numbers:
- Prendergast retired the first nine batters he faced.
- Prendergast took the loss with four earned runs over 5.1 innings pitched.
- Freshman Corey Sawyer (Kearny, N.J.) made his Owen T. Carroll Field debut and retired his lone batter.
- Fortin and Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) are the lone Pirates to reach base twice.
- Freshman Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) drove in the Pirates second run with a pinch-hit RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning.
- Seton Hall left nine men on base, while Butler left five.
- Seton Hall has committed more than one error only once in its last nine games.
- Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) went 1-for-4 and now has a team-high six-game hit streak.
- Seton Hall falls to 5-5 all-time against Butler.
Seton Hall will return tomorrow when it continues its three-game series vs. Butler at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET.
