PREVIEW:
Seton Hall will return to action this weekend when it returns to Owen T. Carroll Field for a three-game series against Creighton. Friday's first pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. ET and will be shown on the BIG EAST Digital Network. Saturday will feature a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. ET.
Â
The Pirates are coming off a weekend in which they dropped two of three games in a close series at No. 11 St. John's. The Pirates fell in the opener on Friday, 9-2, but bounced back with a 7-0 shut out on Saturday. Sophomore Cullen Dana tossed seven shutout innings and struck out eight batters in the victory. Matt Fortin drove in three runs and Joe Poduslenko connected on his team-leading sixth home run of the season. On Sunday, The Hall lost 2-1 as the Red Storm walked off with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning. Zach Prendergast allowed one run over six innings in a no decision. Both Anthony Pacillo and Mikael Ali-Mogues made their returns to the team from injury. .
Â
SERIES INFORMATION:
Seton Hall and Creighton don't have a long history, and the results have been somewhat lop-sided, but the games have been close and the matchup has turned into one of the better new rivalries in the BIG EAST. The Bluejays have won 10 of the first 13 games between the teams, but eight of the 13 games have been decided by two runs or less. Last year, Creighton won two of three games during the regular season in Omaha, and came back to defeat the Pirates, 6-5, in the opening round of the 2017 BIG EAST Championship.
Â
Creighton enters this weekend with a 19-17 record overall and an 8-2 mark in conference play. Rain limited the Bluejays to just one game last weekend, a 2-1 loss against Xavier. The loss snapped an 11-game win streak, which included a three-game sweep of Villanova the weekend prior. Creighton is 5-9 this season on the road.
Â
THINGS TO KNOW:
DANA PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Sophomore Cullen Dana was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Monday. The 6-foot-5 left-hander tossed seven shutout innings at St. John's on Saturday. He struck out eight and walked only two. It was the first time St. John's was shut out this season.
Â
PIRATES DROP SERIES AT ST. JOHN'S
Seton Hall and St. John's played a close series with each team registering a blow-out win before the Red Storm walked off against the Pirates in Sunday's rubber game. St. John's won 9-2 on Friday, but The Hall bounced back with a 7-0 victory on Saturday. On Sunday, a pair of two-out hits in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Red Storm a 2-1 win.
Â
10 FOR TOKE
Freshman Matt Toke has hit safely in his last 10 games, which is the second-longest hits streak of the season for the Pirates. Over that period, the first baseman is batting .405 with a team-best 17 hits and 22 total bases.
Â
FORTIN EMERGING
Senior Matt Fortin has been one of the hotter Seton Hall hitters of late. In his last 10 games, he is batting .324 with seven extra-base hits and eight RBIs, both team-bests over that span. Fortin was 3-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs vs. St. John's on Saturday.
Â
PIRATES DOWN ST. JOHN'S
On Saturday, the Pirates defeated the Red Storm, 7-0. It was the first time this season that St. John's was shut out. Cullen Dana tossed seven scoreless innings to get the victory against the nation's sixth-ranked offense.
Â
BEDN THIS WEEKEND
Seton Hall's game vs. Creighton on Friday will be shown via the BIG EAST Digital Network on the Fox Sports Go app. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET. Be sure to tune in!
Â
PIRATES BLANK SAINT PETER'S
Six Seton Hall pitchers combined to shut out Saint Peter's on Wednesday, 11-0. The Pirates used a six-run second inning to provide all the offense they would need. Matt Toke collected three hits for The Hall. Ryan Ramiz drove in three runs. Jackson Martin hit his second career home run.
Â
21 STRAIGHT
In Seton Hall's 11-0 victory over Saint Peter's on Wednesday, Pirate pitching retired 21 straight batters at one point. After Chris Morris allowed a leadoff single in the second inning, he, combined with efforts by relievers Billy Layne, Jr., Andrew Politi, Matt Ponsiglione and Matt Leon sent down 21 consecutive Peacocks until Ryan Testani allowed a leadoff single to begin the ninth inning.
Â
HALL SWEEPS HOYAS
Seton Hall earned a much needed sweep over Georgetown last weekend for its first BIG EAST series victory of the season. All three Pirate starters earned victories and the Seton Hall offense erupted for 26 runs and 35 hits over the three-games.
Â
400TH WIN
Seton Hall's victory over Georgetown on April 22 was the 400th BIG EAST Conference victory in program history. In 28+ years, the Pirates are 402-330-2.
Â
CLIMBING STARTS LIST
This weekend's start will be the 37th in the career of senior Zach Prendergast. It moves him into fifth place on Seton Hall's all-time starts list. Jon Prosinski's 57 starts are the most in Pirate history.
