Seton Hall, which won for the seventh time in its last eight games, belted out season-highs of 17 hits and 14 runs. Shedler-McAvoy and Christian Del Castillo (Miami, Fla.) led the hit parade with three apiece. Shedler-McAvoy finished 3-for-5 with five RBIs, a triple and two runs scored. Del Castillo was only a home run shy of the cycle, gong 3-for-4 with a triple a double, an RBI and two runs scored.
Seton Hall starter David Festa (Verona, N.J.) battled control issues early, but allowed only two runs on three hits over four innings. He struck out four and walked three in a no decision. The Pirate bullpen allowed only one run and one hit over the game's final five innings. Relievers Blake Espinal (Bronx, N.Y.) and Sean Miller (Newton, N.J.) each tossed two perfect innings.
What Happened:
Seton Hall got on the scoreboard first with a little two-out magic in the top of the first inning. With two down, Del Castillo tripled to right field, and came in to score on an RBI double to the left-center field gap by Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.). Shedler-McAvoy followed with a single to score Toke and give The Hall an early 2-0 advantage.
The Hall's lead however, was short-lived as Festa ran into control issues in the bottom of the first, leading to a pair of Iona runs that tied the game at two.
In the top of the third inning, the Pirates jumped back in front thanks to a one-out RBI double by Del Castillo. They added two insurance runs in the top of the fourth inning due to some timely hitting and good base-running. With one out, Sebastiano Santorelli (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) singled and stole second base. After Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.Y.) walked, a double steal moved both runners into scoring position. Freshman Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) followed with a run-scoring groundout, and Huntzinger singled up the middle to extend the Pirates' lead to 5-2.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Pirates blew the game open. The Hall sent 11 men to the plate and scored six runs on seven hits. In the offensive onslaught, Shedler-McAvoy had a two-RBI single, Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) had a run-scoring double, Santorelli singled in a run, and Clyde drove in two more with a double. When the smoke cleared, The Hall had a commanding 11-2 advantage.
