After scoring two or fewer runs in each of the last four games, the Pirates offense broke out for nine runs on 12 hits, including four by Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) and three by Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.). Shedler-McAvoy had a monster game, going 4-for-6 with three doubles, three runs scored and an RBI. Toke reached base five times, going 3-for-4 with two walks, two runs scored, a double and a three-run home run.
Both Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.) and Sebastiano Santorelli (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) also had a pair of hits.
After a rocky start, Seton Hall pitchers looked good in game one. Freshman Cole Patten (Manasquan, N.J.) tossed 4.2 innings of relief and allowed only one run on two hits with five strikeouts and only two walks. Sophomore Hunter Waldis (Far Hills, N.J.) pitched the final 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit, while striking out six batters with no walks to earn the victory.
What Happened:
Butler struck for three runs in the top of the first inning off Seton Hall starter Noah Thompson (Frisco, Texas), who had some trouble finding the strike zone. The Hall however, got two runs back in the bottom of the frame. After Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.) walked to lead off, Shedler-McAvoy belted a double to left field. Christian Del Castillo (Miami, Fla.) followed with an RBI ground out to first base, and Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) hit a sacrifice fly to left to cut the Bulldogs' lead to 3-2.
In the top of the second, Butler's Harrison Freed belted a three-run home run to extend the Bulldogs' advantage to 6-2. In the bottom of the third, Toke did the same to Butler starter Ryan Pepiot. With one out, Toke slugged a three-run shot over the right field fence to cut the Butler lead to 6-5.
After Butler got an insurance run to go up, 7-5, in the top of the fourth, Shedler-McAvoy's one-out double down the left field line drove in Huntzinger to again cut the lead to one.
After trailing through the first four innings, the Pirates claimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Toke led off with a single through the right side and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.). Santorelli followed with an RBI single through the right side to tie the game at seven. With two outs, Hood also found the hole between second and first to drive in the go-ahead run, 8-7.
In the top of the seventh inning, Butler tied the game at eight with a run off Corey Sawyer (Kearny, N.J.). The Pirate lefty did a fine job limiting the damage however, leaving the bases full.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, Shedler-McAvoy reached on a bloop double when the Butler center fielder lost the ball in the sun. Bulldog reliever Quentin Miller then walked the next three batters to force in the winning run.
