Hall wins two of three in Winston-Salem to open the season
The Hall defeated their last two opponents of weekend by a combined score of 27-3 after falling in walk-off fashion to No. 20 Wake Forest, 4-3, on Friday evening.
Five different players registered multi-hit games and five players drove in two or more runs against the Panthers. The Seton Hall pitching staff didn't allow an earned run and sophomore David Festa (Verona, N.J.) earned the win as he struck out five batters in 6.1 innings of work.
What Happened:
After giving up an unearned run in the top of the first, Festa struck out two batters in the top of the second to keep the Panthers off the scoreboard. In the home half, sophomore Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) led off with a single down the first base line and he later moved to second on a single by sophomore David Haberman (Morristown, N.J.). With two outs, freshman Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) delivered with a double to right center that scored Grober, tying the game up at 1-1.
Festa had retired 10 batters in a row until the top of the sixth when he walked the leadoff man. On the first pitch of the next at-bat, Festa induced a double play turned by junior Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) at third base, sophomore Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) at second and senior Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) at first.
Toke then stepped to the plate in the bottom of the sixth with senior Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) on first base and no one out. On a 3-2 pitch, Toke turned on the ball and sent it ricocheting off the brick scoreboard in right field, putting the Pirates in front, 3-1.
Later in the inning, Clyde put down a squeeze bunt that scored senior Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.) from third and advanced Dana, who singled earlier, to second base. Dana was driven in by Haberman, whose RBI single extended the Pirates' lead to 5-1.
After Festa and sophomore Brennan O'Neill (Morristown, N.J.) combined to retire the side in the top of the seventh, the home half of the inning saw the Hall score 11 runs on seven hits. Hood posted two RBI singles, Dana drove in a run on a single, Haberman and Shedler-McAvoy picked up RBIs on walks, junior Thomas Holdorf (Freehold, N.J.) and freshman Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) had RBI doubles and sophomore Bobby Sheppard (Basking Ridge, N.J.) pushed a run across on a sac fly.
The next inning, Holdorf rocketed his first career home run, a solo blast, that made it 17-1 Seton Hall in the bottom of the eighth. Junior Tyler Burnham (East Brunswick, N.J.) finished out the game for the Pirates.
