Flames even the series and the rubber match will go down tomorrow at 1 p.m.
The Flames, a team that finished 40th in the RPI last season, kept the Pirate bats in check all afternoon as the Hall (3-2) registered two of its five hits in the ninth inning. Sophomore Cole Patten (Manasquan, N.J.) and Thompson (0-1) combined to allow only four hits.
What Happened:
After Thompson retired the first three batters he faced and striking out the side in the second, the Flames got on the board first on an error in the bottom of the third that made it 1-0.
The Pirates answered right back in the top of the fourth when senior Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) walked to lead of the inning, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Junior Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) sent him home on an RBI groundout that tied up the score at 1-1.
After a Liberty home run broke the tie in the home half of the fourth, the Flames capitalized on another Seton Hall error that kept an unearned run on base and gave themselves a 3-1 advantage.
Thompson and Patten combined to allow only two more batters to reach base the rest of the way, keeping the Pirates in the contest. In the top of the ninth, sophomore Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) roped a double down the right field line with two outs and he was lifted for pinch runner Will Gale (Scotch Plains, N.J.). Freshman Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) came in to pinch hit and he delivered with an RBI single that scored Gale from second and cut the deficit to one, 3-2. The Pirate rally would end there though as the Flames forced a rubber match.
