
Pirates Erupt for 23 Runs; Split Opening Day

The Pirates grabbed the lead early and rallied late but came up just short against the Lancers in game one on the season.
How it Happened
- The Pirates took an early 1-0 lead on a Payton Beaver (Lake Stevens, Wash.) single that scored Hailey Arteaga (Upland, Calif.) for the Pirates' first run of the year.
- Janae Barracato (Hempstead, N.Y.) picked up where she left off last season driving in two runs to build The Hall's lead to three in the top of the fourth.
- After being held scoreless through three, last year's Big South Champion scored seven unanswered runs.
- The Pirates showed life in the sixth and seventh scoring a run in each inning, respectively, before falling by a score of 7-5.
- Freshman Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) drove in her first collegiate run with her single in the seventh that cut the Longwood lead to two.
- Fellow freshman Jordan Tressler (Rocklin, Calif.) also picked up her first two collegiate hits in the setback.
- Barracato picked up three RBIs for the Pirates.
- Despite the loss, the Pirates only gave up one earned run with Reganne Camp (Bloomington, Ill.) and Mo Sobel (Newbury Parks, Calif.) allowing only eight hits in the game.
The Pirates erupted for 17 runs in the second game of the afternoon, picking up their first win of the season.
How it Happened
- The hosts scored first with two runs in the home half of the first.
- The Pirates quickly rebounded with seven runs in the second with RBIs from Barracato, Beaver, Darby Pandolfo (Massapequa, N.Y.), Wingo and Marisa Pla (San Clemente, Calif.).
- The Phoenix answered with four runs in their half of the second to bring the Pirate lead to one.
- The Hall added three more in the fourth with Kiana Tate (Las Vegas, Nev.) doubling in a run.
- In the fifth, Wingo and Pla picked up two more RBI singles apiece.
- The sixth saw the Pirates really open things up with four more runs.
- The Pirates seven runs in the second inning set a season high for runs in an inning.
- Seventeen runs for The Hall are the most scored by the Pirates since they beat Bucknell 18-8 on Feb. 18, 2017.
- The Pirates scored 13 of their runs with two outs in the inning.
- Seven different Pirates drove in runs with Barracato, Beaver, Wingo, and Pla driving in multiple runners.
- Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) picked up her first collegiate win with 4.1 innings of scoreless relief.
The Pirates continue play at the Elon Softball classic when they play a doubleheader against Rhode Island starting at 9:30 a.m.
