Tyler Burnham throws six scoreless innings in his first win of the season
By Mark Mincolelli
NEW YORK - Senior hurler Tyler Burnham (East Brunswick, N.J.) threw six innings of shutout baseball and junior right-hander Brennan O'Neill (Morristown, N.J.) struck out a pair of batters in two strong frames of relief as the Seton Hall baseball team took Wednesday's contest against the Fordham Rams, 4-3.
Â
Burnham frustrated the Ram lineup through two-thirds of the ball game giving up just two hits and one walk on one strikeout. The left-hander earned his first win of 2021. O'Neill took the mound in the seventh inning and held Fordham to just one run while registering his 14th and 15th punch-outs on the year.
Â
Offensively, senior Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) tallied two base hits and registered his 54th career stolen base, while junior Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) had two RBI and sophomore Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Â
Here's What Happened:
Â
Both teams were scoreless through four full frames of play when Seton Hall's Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) came to the plate in the top of the fifth. Hack, a sophomore, opened the scoring with a ripping single into right field that scored both Luders and junior Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.).
Â
A seventh-inning solo home run over the left field wall brought Fordham to within one run, 2-1, but the Pirates responded in the top of the eighth. With one out and two runners in scoring position, Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) dropped a perfectly placed sacrifice bunt that scored both graduate student Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) from third base and Shedler-McAvoy, who never broke his sprinting-stride, from second, giving Seton Hall a more comfortable 4-1 lead.
Â
Pirate pitching ran into a jam in the bottom of the ninth as Fordham pulled within a run, 4-3, courtesy of a two-run double However, junior reliever Sean Miller (Newton, N.J.) came in and generated a game-concluding double-play, closing out the Pirates sixth win of 2021. The appearance marked Miller's first career save.
