Pirates will look to clinch the series tomorrow
The Pirates (15-14, 8-2 BIG EAST) took game one, 11-1, and game two, 19-4. Junior David Festa (Verona, N.J.) earned the win on the mound in game one where he didn't allow an earned run in 5.1 innings of work and junior Joe Cinnella (Mahwah, N.J.) picked up the winning decision in the second game where he tossed three innings of scoreless relief.
Junior Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) came in as a substitute in the first game and finished the day with six runs batted in, a home run and four runs scored over the two games. Junior Jerry Huntzinger (Staten Island, N.Y.) went 5-for-9 with five doubles and five RBI while senior Casey Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) went 3-for-6 with five RBI and a home run. Junior Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) added a long ball in the first game, his second of the season.
How It Happened:
In game one, after Festa registered two strikeouts in the bottom of the first, the Pirates scored first for the fifth time over the last six games in the top of the second. Graduate student Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) led off the frame with a walk on a 3-2 count before moving to second base on sacrifice bunt by classmate Connor Hood (Shrewsbury, Pa.). Toke would go on to score the game's first run as senior Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) sent him home on a single up the middle.
Seton Hall extended its lead in the top of the fifth. Huntzinger got the scoring started with an RBI double down the left field line that plated sophomore Will Gale (Scotch Plains, N.J.). Sophomore Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) was the next batter and, with one out, dragged a bunt up the third base line. The St. John's third baseman's errant throw went into the dirt and got away and Huntzinger came around to score from second, giving Seton Hall a 2-0 advantage. With Hack on second base, Dana lifted his fourth home run of the season and the 21st of his career over the left field wall that made it 4-0 Pirates.
St. John's would respond with a run in the home half of the fifth that made it 4-1 but the Pirate offense continued its clutch hitting with two outs in the bottom half. With Gale and Grober on second and third, respectively, with two outs, Huntzinger delivered again his second double of the game that cleared the bases. Seton Hall poured it on in the top of the seventh thanks to back-to-back home runs by Clyde – a three-run blast – and Grober, both of which came with two outs.
Freshman Drew Conover (Pittstown, N.J.) – who didn't allow a hit in 1.2 innings of relief – finished the 11-1 victory for The Hall.
Game two was more of the same for the Seton Hall offense but the Pirates first needed to dig out of a hole. St. John's put three runs on the board in the bottom of the first. Cinnella came on in relief and retired the side in the second that kept it a 3-0 game before The Hall put together a response in the top of the third.
With two on and one out, Huntzinger found the left field line again as he knocked in Gale and Clyde on a bases clearing double. After Huntzinger stole third, Hack evened up the score at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly. The Pirates took the lead in the fourth where they pushed across five runs, including RBI singles by Gale, Dana and Toke.
The Hall added to its lead in the top of the sixth as Dana drove in a run on an RBI and one-run singles off the bats of Toke and Grober made it 11-3 in favor of the Pirates. Despite a St. John's run in the home half of the sixth, The Hall continued to pour it on in the top of the seventh where eight runs came across, producing the final score of 19-4.
