West Long Branch, N.J. — Junior Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) posted his second consecutive three-hit game and freshman Michael Callan Moss (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit his first career home run but the Seton Hall baseball team fell to Monmouth on the road, 7-6, on Tuesday afternoon.
Seton Hall outhit the Hawks, 12-10, but was plagued by 15 runners left on base. Sophomore Chris Lotito (Middletown, N.J.) struck out two batters and allowed an earned run in his first career start.
How It Happened
The Pirates found some life in the top of the seventh trailing 4-1. Sophomore Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) led off the inning with a double down the left field line on a 2-0 pitch and later moved to third on a wild pitch. Freshman Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) then stepped to the plate chopped a grounder to the shortstop that allowed Sylvester to score for The Hall's first run.
The Hawks extended their lead but Seton Hall wouldn't back down. With one out, freshman Jack Wentworth (Wakefield, R.I.) singled up the middle and Luders followed up with a walk to put two runners on. Moss was the next batter and he drove a 1-1 pitch deep over the center field wall for a three-run home run that cut the Pirates' deficit to three, 7-4. Later in the inning, with two outs and runners on first and second, freshman Jedier Hernandez (Trenton, N.J.) poked a base hit into center that drove Sylvester in from second and made it a two-run game, 7-5.
Senior Blaise Panzini (Spring Lake, N.J.) came out of the bullpen for the bottom of eighth and worked through a bases loaded jam by striking out two batters to end the inning. Senior Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) came in to pinch hit to lead off the top of the ninth and hit by a pitch. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and Luders drove him home that trimmed the Monmouth to lead to one, 7-6. However, a double play ended the Pirate threat.
