
Xie, Pirates Excel Through Two Rounds at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, PA. – Junior Wenliang Xie (Zhaoqing, China) is 3-under-par through two rounds and has guided the Seton Hall men's golf team to a fourth-place standing with 18 holes remaining of the 2022 Rutherford Intercollegiate at Penn State.

Xie roared out of the gate, birdying six of his first 10 holes in round one in route to a 3-under-par, 68. In round two, he had three birdies and 12 pars on his way to an even-par, 71. For the tournament, Xie is tied for second among 78 individual golfers with a 3-under-par, 68-71-139. He trails the individual leader, Penn State's James Allen, by four strokes entering Sunday's final round.

Seton Hall is very much alive in its chase for a third tournament victory in its last four events. The Pirates shot a 1-over-par, 285, in round one, and a 6-over-par, 290, in round two. Entering round three, The Hall is 7-over-par with a 285-290-575. Michigan State is the team leader at 1-over-par.

Two other BIG EAST schools are also competing. Georgetown is sixth at 17-over-par, while Connecticut is tied for ninth at 23-over-par.

Graduate student Gregor Tait (Martlesham Heath, England) also had a spectacular first round, using five birdies to power a 2-under-par, 69. In the afternoon, he settled with a 3-over-par, 74. Through two rounds, he's tied for 10th with a 69-74-143.

Sophomore Wanxi Sun (Danville, Calif.) was consistent on Saturday, shooting a par of 2-over-par, 74's. In round one, he had four birdies, in round two, he had two birdies and 12 pars. For the tournament, he's tied for 22nd with a 4-over-par, 73-73-146.

Graduate student Andres Acevedo (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Angus O'Brien (Barwon Heads, Australia) are currently tied for 53rd place at 8-over-par. Acevedo shot a 7-over-par, 78, in round one, but shaved off six strokes, thanks to 15 pars, to finish with a 1-over-par, 72, in round two. For the tournament, he is 8-over-par with a 78-72-150.

O'Brien was consistent throughout Saturday, shooting a pair of 4-over-par, 75's. For the event, he's 8-over-par with a 75-75-150.

In addition to Seton Hall and host Penn State, the field features 12 other teams including: Bowling Green, Dayton, Eastern Michigan, George Mason, Loyola (Md.), Maryland, Michigan State, Oakland, Richmond and Saint Mary's. Two additional BIG EAST competitors are also in the field, Connecticut and Georgetown.

The teams will play five golfers and count the four lowest scores per round.

PAIRINGS / TEE TIMES
The field will play two continuous rounds on Saturday with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. off the first and 10th tees. Seton Hall will be paired with players from Connecticut and Oakland on Saturday. Final round tee times will begin at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday.
