Pirates Fall In Saturday Doubleheader Against Mercer

South Orange, N.J. — Graduate student Collin Sheehan (Doylestown, Pa.) went 4-for-8 with two doubles over two games but the Seton Hall baseball team dropped both games of the doubleheader against Mercer on Saturday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates dropped the first game, 7-1, before falling in game two, 14-2.
Despite holding Mercer to only two hits yesterday in a 1-0 loss, the Bears came to life on Saturday offensively. Both teams tallied eight hits in game one with Sheehan leading the way and senior Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) chipping in with a 2-for-4 afternoon. Freshman Jedier Hernandez (Trenton, N.J.) posted a multi-hit game with two base hits in game two.
How It Happened
In game one, the Bears scored early and often as they plated runs in the first and second innings before a three-run home run broke the game open and made it 5-0 in the top of the fourth.
In the home half of the fourth, senior Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) drew a walk and Grober and Sheehan loaded the bases on back-to-back singles. A passed ball to the back stop allowed Pokrovsky to advance home as Seton Hall cut its deficit to four, 5-1. Later in the inning, the Pirates looked to keep the rally going with two runners in scoring position and no one out but a liner off the bat of junior Mark McNelly (Limerick, Pa.) was caught by the pitcher and runner was doubled off at third base for the second out. A strikeout on the next batter ended the Seton Hall threat.
The Pirates would put runners on in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings but couldn't capitalize. They also loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth but The Hall couldn't extend the game.
In game two, Mercer led off the game with a home run but starter Brennan O'Neill (Morristown, N.J.) settled down and left the Bears scoreless in the second and third innings. However, a bases clearing three-run double in the top of the fourth that gave the Bears a 4-0 lead.
sophomore Zane Probst (Mill Hall, Pa.) came on in relief in the top of the fifth and he retired the side in order in the top of the sixth. With a runner on first in the home half of the sixth, Sheehan ripped a double to the left center field gap that scored junior Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) and made it 4-1 in favor of the Bears. It wouldn't be enough though as Mercer would post a crooked number with seven runs in the eighth inning that created separation for good.
