South Orange, N.J. — Junior Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) continued his hot hitting with a three-hit afternoon to go along with three runs batted in as he set the tone for the Seton Hall offense in the Pirates' 8-3 win over Lafayette on Wednesday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Luders started the game with three hits in his first three at-bats before registering an RBI groundout in his fourth plate appearance. It ended a streak of eight consecutive at-bats with a hit going back to his final appearance at the plate in the 10-9 win at Creighton on Sunday.
Junior Aaron Groller (Harleysville, Pa.) moved to 3-0 on the season after going four innings and allowing two runs in his fourth start of the season. Senior Alex Nicolosi (Stony Point, N.Y.) fanned four batters in three innings of relief work.
How It Happened
Groller started the game off strong, retiring the first six batters he faced in order on three groundouts and three fly outs. The Pirates helped him out in the bottom of the second inning where they kept the line moving with two outs. Junior Oscar Murray (Brentwood, Calif.) the scoring started with a single up the middle that scored freshman Jedier Hernandez (Trenton, N.J.) easily from third base that gave Seton Hall a 1-0 lead. With two runners on, Hack drove a ball over the left fielder's head that cleared the bases. With The Hall now leading 3-0, Luders' second hit of the day drove in Hack, making it 4-0 Pirates.
The Leopards trimmed their deficit to two, 4-2, in the top of the fourth but Seton Hall responded with three more runs in the bottom half of the inning. With one out and two on, Luders stroked his third base hit of the day and his eighth consecutive hit in as many at bats through the right side that allowed Murray to score from third. With Hack third and Luders on second, freshman Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) registered an RBI groundout that scored Hack and a single to left off the bat of senior Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) that brought home Luders, extending the Pirates' advantage to 7-2.
Nicolosi came out of the bullpen and recorded two strikeouts in the top of the fifth inning and Luders came through again in the bottom of the sixth, this time scoring Murray from third base on an RBI groundout that gave Seton Hall an 8-2 lead. Nicolosi worked another scoreless inning in the seventh, freshman Christian Finnigan (Ladera Ranch, Calif.) came on to record a 1-2-3 eighth and senior Nick Payero (Monroe, N.J.) recorded the final two outs of the ninth inning to seal the victory.
