No. 12 UNC Evens Series Against The Pirates
2/18/2023 8:51:00 PM | Baseball
Junior Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) tallied his first RBI as a Pirate and junior Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) went 1-for-4 with a double for the Pirates (1-1).
How It Happened
Similar to game one, redshirt junior Will Gale (Scotch Plains, N.J.) led off the game with a walk and stole second base. After sophomore Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) drew the Pirates' second consecutive walk, Gale caught the infield sleeping and stole third. His craftiness on the base paths drew a poor throw from the catcher and it allowed Gale to score from third, giving The Hall an early 1-0 lead. Junior Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) singled through the left side to keep he line moving and a wild pitch moved him and D'Amico into scoring position. Viera then lifted a 3-2 pitch to right field that allowed D'Amico to score on the sac fly and it extended Seton Hall's lead to 2-0.
Sophomore Daniel Frontera (Red Bank, N.J.) worked back-to-back scoreless frames in the first and second but ran into some trouble in the home half of the the third where the Tar Heels pushed across three runs to go up 3-2. UNC then tacked on four more runs in the fourth and another run in the fifth to take a commanding six-run lead, 8-2. The Pirates threatened in the top of the fifth when redshirt juniors Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) both reached on base hits but they couldn't chip away at the deficit.
