Junior Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) went 2-for-5 with three RBI while sophomore Nick Ferri (Flemington, N.J.) and senior Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) both had two-run singles for the Pirates (1-1). After Reich's strong start, the Seton Hall bullpen combined to allow only one earned run and it was led by sophomore Michael Gillen (Rochelle Park, N.J.), who fanned three in two scoreless innings of work.
How It Happened
Reich looked dominant at the start as he struck out the first six Spartans he faced in the first and second innings. The Pirates' offense helped his cause in the top of the third where D'Amico hit a single to left that scored Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) and Frankie Scravanic (Tinton Falls, N.J.) and made it 2-0 Seton Hall.
After Reich worked out of mild trouble in the third and fourth innings, Michigan State pieced together a three-run bottom of the fifth on a single and a two-run home run that gave it a 3-2 lead. Nate Espelin (Belmont, Mass.) and Jay Allmer (Cary, N.C.) combined to keep the Spartans off the board in the home half of the sixth and it set the stage for a five-run top of the seventh for the Pirates that put them back in front. It started with D'Amico's second run-scoring single of the day and Sylvester and Ferri followed suit with two two-run base hits that gave Seton Hall a 7-3 advantage.
Michigan State scratched a run across in the bottom half of the seventh on a Seton Hall error that made it 7-4 but Allmer prevented further damage by inducing an inning-ending double play. With The Hall holding on to a three-run lead in the top of the ninth, Pokrovsky delivered a two-out, two-run single to left center field that added key insurance and made it 9-4 Pirates. Danny Melnick (Hamilton, N.J.) registered his first RBI as a Pirate with an RBI single that extended Seton Hall's lead to 10-4.
