South Orange, N.J. — Ryan Reich (Sellinsgrove, Pa.) had another strong start tossing five shutout innings with five strikeouts and Aiden Robbins (Yardley, Pa.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI triple but Stony Brook came up with timely hitting as the Seawolves took game two from Seton Hall, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium.
How It Happened
The Pirates jumped out in front in the bottom of the first inning. Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) led off the frame with a single up the middle and the next batter was Robbins who drove him in with his first career triple. Danny Melnick (Hamilton, N.J.)Â then stepped to the plate and made solid contact with a ball that went off the pitcher and in between the shortstop and the third baseman. It was enough to bring him Robbins from third and give The Hall a 2-0 lead.
Stony Brook looked to respond in the top of the second as they loaded bases but Reich recorded consecutive strikeouts and induced a fly ball to left field that ended the threat. At the plate, the next six Pirates in the row were retired before Stony Brook threatened again in the top of the fifth.Â
The Seawolves got the lead-off man on with a base hit but a pop up to shortstop Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) and a runner caught stealing by Staus Pokrovsky (Piitsgrove, N.J.) gave Seton Hall two outs. However, a walk, an error, and a wild pitch moved two Stony Brook runners into scoring position. The next batter scorched a liner to left field but Robbins was there to make a sliding catch that preserved the lead.
The Pirates looked to extend their lead in the home half of the fifth as Luders reached on a two-out single and Viera followed with a walk. Both runners would be left stranded, however, and the Seawolves capitalized by tying up the score on a two-run single in the top of the sixth.Â
Stony Brook got the lead-off runner on in the top of the ninth via a walk but Jay Allmer (Asheville, N.C.) got the next two batters to groundout. With a runner now on third, the Seawolves came up with a base knock that scored the go-ahead run.
