Pirates' Late Rally Falls Short at Monmouth

South Orange, N.J. – The Pirates threatened late by putting the go-ahead run in scoring position in the top of the ninth, but were unable to rally back in a narrow 6-5 defeat at Monmouth on Wednesday afternoon.

How it Happened
After a silent first inning, the home side would take the lead in the bottom of the second on a solo home run from Nick Lovarco. However, it would not take long for Seton Hall to counter with some damage of its own. After Frankie Scrivanic and Nick Tomasetto each reached base to open the top of the fourth, a throwing error allowed them both to score and give the Pirates a 2-1 lead. One batter later, Joe Marini lifted a sacrifice fly to right, bringing home Ryan Strnad with the third run of the frame.

The Hawks would get one run back in the bottom of the fourth, but the trio of Pirate relievers in Matt Pontari, Jayden Barroqueiro and Stephen Curry held the lead. Pontari struck out two batters in his two innings of work, while Barroqueiro allowed just one hit in his two shutout innings. Curry then came on to work a shutdown seventh inning.

Monmouth would get to the Pirate bullpen in the eighth, scoring four times to take a 6-3 lead into the ninth. Seton Hall would not go quietly as a walk and back-to-back hit batsmen loaded the bases with nobody out. Ryan Frontera brought the Pirates back within a run with a two-run single to right, scoring Jake Lopez and Tommy Manzo. That was as close as Seton Hall would get, as a groundout and two flyouts stranded the tying and go-ahead runs on base.
