Over the last few weeks, SHUpirates.com conducted a question and answer session with each of Seton Hall's senior women's golfers. Today, we caught up with Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.).
1. What are you most proud of in your athletic career here at Seton Hall?
For my own career, I am probably most proud of being honored my sophomore year as Female Athlete of the Year. To work so hard all year and see that recognized was a great feeling. As proud as I am of that, though, it doesn't even compare to how proud I am of how this team has developed in the past three and a half years. Since coming to Seton Hall my freshman year, I have seen this program grow from a small, first-year team with few expectations into a strong, competitive, and amazing group. I don't think a single person thought we would be able to accomplish all that we have. To have been a part of developing this program from the beginning has meant the world.
2. Tell us about some of your best memories over the past three and a half years as a student-athlete.
Almost all of my favorite memories are from times spent with my team. I know everyone has loved the van rides complete with ridiculous songs and horrible singing. The Super Bowl party we had last year was another great moment. All nine of us packed into my tiny living room with enough food to feed about 30 people and not a single person paid attention to the game.
3. Looking back, what was your favorite class that you have taken?
Unlike a lot of college students, I love going to class. Coach makes fun of me because I hate missing them for tournaments. As an English major, I've loved taking different classes and reading all different types of literature. One of my favorites was my American Gothic fiction class. On a completely unrelated note, I'm taking a Traditional American Crafts class this semester that is already a favorite.
4. Looking forward to your last semester here at Seton Hall, what are you most looking forward to in the Spring season?
I'm just really looking forward to making the most of my last moments as a Seton Hall student-athlete. The entire team is going on our spring break trip to California, which will be an awesome start to our last spring season. I'm also excited to see what we can accomplish in the next few months and wouldn't want to work towards our goals with any other group of girls.
5. If you could step back to the fall of 2010, what advice would you give to your freshman self?
The two biggest things I'd tell myself are to not stress over uncontrollable things and to have more confidence. I have always struggled with having confidence in my abilities as an athlete, and all too often I let it affect me in unnecessary ways. I've learned that there are so many different ways to define and measure success that my worries weren't necessary. There's always something good to be found or learned in any situation.
6. What are your plans after you graduate?
I plan on going to graduate school for English literature. I hope to eventually earn a PhD in English or work in publishing.
