CRYSTAL RIVER, FLA. - The Seton Hall women's golf team will begin the 2014 spring season at the University of Cincinnati Spring Invitational at Plantation Inn Golf Resort and Spa, March 21-23.
Fifteen teams will compete on Plantation Inn's par-72, 6,054-yard course for three rounds over three days. In addition to Seton Hall and host Cincinnati, participating schools include: Bradley, Embry Riddle, Florida Atlantic, Florida Southern, Jacksonville University, Lynn University, Memphis, North Dakota State, Seminole State, Southern Mississippi, University of Tampa, UAB- Birmingham and UT- Pan Am.
"Our spring training trip to the west coast was a great opportunity for us last week," said Head Coach Sara Doell. "We had several practices that gave the team a chance to work on their mechanics and to gain confidence in their swings and short game. We also played five times on some top notch golf courses."
In 2013, Seton Hall placed fifth among a field of 17 teams at the University of Cincinnati Spring Invitational. The Pirates shot a collective 40-over-par, 12 strokes behind the team champion and host, Cincinnati. Junior Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) was the top returning finisher with a 10-over-par, 78-76-154. She tied for 22nd place overall. Rain prematurely ended the tournament after only two rounds.
This year, in addition to Kruse, Seton Hall will bring Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.), McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.), Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) and Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) to Crystal River, Fla.
"I was very encouraged by the effort I saw from the team and feel that we're ready to go down to Florida and fair well against this field," Doell said. "Every player on the team has played this golf course and had some success here in the past. We will draw off those experiences as we enter our first event of the spring"
Seton Hall is coming off a strong fall season which saw five, top-five finishes in six tournaments. The Pirates also won their third team title in program history, a 10-stroke victory at the Sacred heart Fall Classic. Seton Hall also placed second at the Rutgers Invitational and the Bucknell Invitational. Erin McClure took home her first career individual title with a one-stroke victory at Rutgers.
Results will be available at SHUpirates.com following each round's completion.
