BEDMINSTER, N.J. - < b="">Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) shot a team-best 7-over-par, 79, as the Seton Hall women's golf team occupies fifth place after round one of the inaugural Seton Hall Pirate Invitational at Trump National.
Scores across the board on Saturday were higher than normal due to very high winds. Winds in Bedminster, N.J. were sustained at 25 mph during the hours of competition early in the afternoon. As a result, only nine of the 90 individual golfers posted scores in the 70s.
Collectively, the Pirates are in fifth place following a 40-over-par, 328. They trail the team leaders, Princeton, by eight strokes entering Sunday's final round.
"Considering the cold and windy conditions, I'm very pleased with our overall effort," said Head Coach Sara Doell. "All of the teams had a hard time dealing with the wind today, but we were able to battle through it and will have a chance to move up the leader board tomorrow."
Basalone is currently tied for eighth place and trails the individual leader, Princeton's Kelly Shon, by five strokes.
Junior Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) is currently tied for 20th place among 90 individual golfers following her first round 10-over-par, 82. Sophomore Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) is only one stroke behind McClure in a tie for 25th place following her 11-over-par, 83.
Sophomore Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) is tied for 29th place following a 12-over-par, 84, while Alison Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) rounded out the scoring with a 14-over-par, 86.
Because Seton Hall is the host team, the Pirates were able to have their entire roster golf in the tournament. Therefore, the Pirates also had their "B" team compete.
Junior McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) led the "B" Team with a 14-over-par, 86. Senior Haley Van Es (Granger, Ind.) fired a 22-over-par, 94. Senior Samantha Massei (Allen, Texas) tallied a 35-over-par, 107, and senior Stacie Ballou (Staten Island, N.Y.) finished up with a 41-over-par, 113. Eighteen teams in all are competing on Trump's "New Course," a par-72, 6,143-yard gem designed and built by Tom Fazio, who has worked closely with Donald Trump as his in-house golf course designer and builder for almost a decade. The New Course literally frames the Old Course, transforming every inch of available land into a handcrafted masterpiece. With a mix of wooded and open spaces and even more elevation changes, The New Course is distinctly different and boasts old school characteristics such as smaller greens and bunkers.
In addition to two Seton Hall teams, participating schools include Boston University, Bucknell University, Brown University, Central Connecticut State University, Columbia University, Dartmouth College, Hofstra University, LIU-Brooklyn, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, Rutgers University, Sacred Heart University, Siena College, St. John's University, the College of William & Mary and Yale University.
The tournament will conclude tomorrow with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m.
