WGolf Off-Season Q&A: Cassie Pantelas
1/20/2015 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
Freshman Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) has made an immediate impact since joining the program earlier this year. The newcomer averaged 76.64 strokes per round in five tournaments this fall. She became the fourth individual winner in the history of the program with a victory at the St. John's Intercollegiate. Pantelas shot a career-best 1-over-par, 74-69-143, to help Seton Hall win the team event as well. She has two sub-par rounds to her credit so far.
Coach Doell's thoughts on Cassie:
"When I recruited Cassie, I knew that she was going to be a solid player for us. She was just emerging as one of the best players to come out of Ohio for the 2014 class and I found her at an event where I was recruiting other players. I watched her play only a few holes at that event but was extremely impressed with her talent, attitude and course management.
I am very proud of what Cassie has done in her first semester here and in the fashion in which she has done it. This fall she posted the lowest freshman fall scoring average in our history with a 76.64 scoring average through 5 events. She won and event and did so with humility and poise. I am excited to see what else Cassie can accomplish this first year of her career here at Seton Hall."
1. What were the main factors guiding your decision to attend Seton Hall and compete for the Pirates?
I wanted to be part of a great golf program that fit where my game is at. Also I knew at Seton Hall with the help offered I would be able to take my golf game where I want to, there are no limitations. Coach Doell plays a huge role in allowing all of these to happen. She puts together the best lineup and a strong schedule for us tom compete in. Coach and the team were main factors in my decision to come to Seton Hall, we have the best team dynamics and chemistry of any program. In addition to a strong golf program I knew SHU would set me up for success in my academic career. I knew Seton Hall would be the best place for me to come and be able to compete.
2. What are some of your best experiences at Seton Hall, to date?
Some of the best experiences I have had at Seton Hall have been with my best friends who make up the golf team. Each day is a new adventure with them and something I love. Riding in the van to and from practice every day is always filled with laughter. But one day in particular when we got a flat tire on the way back from practice. Usually bad tires are a bad thing but that time was one of the most fun times we have had as a team. Also playing heads up with the team is probably one of the best experiences you can have. There have been so many great experiences with the golf team, I am so blessed to be part of such a group.
3. What are you most proud of in your athletic career?
Winning St. John's individually and as a team. I am the first freshman to win a tournament and the first time we have individually won and as a team. Also as a freshman I have been fortunate enough to crack the starting lineup in all events we have played in.
4. What are you studying and why did you decide to choose that major?
I am studying Public Relations and Journalism. I choose this path because I specifically want to get into communications. From that point I am indecisive about what I would like to do.
5. What three words would you use to describe yourself as a student-athlete?
Confident, supportive, passionate
6. What three words would you use to describe your team?
Awesome, competitive, determined
7. If you could go back to the beginning of your senior year in high school, what would you tell yourself about the transition to college?
I would tell myself to stay true to who I am.
