McClure, Kruse Lift WGolf to the Lead at Rio Verde

RIO VERDE, ARIZ. - Senior Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) fired a 1-under-par, 71, to lift Seton Hall women's golf to the team lead following round one of the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitational at the Rio Verde Golf Club on Friday.
McClure, playing in front of family and friends, is currently the individual leader and is the only player in the field of 96 golfers that is under par. She leads four players that are tied for second by one stroke. One of those for players is teammate Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.), who also had a fantastic first round.
"I am incredibly proud of how we played today," said head coach Sara Doell. "It shows great poise and character for Erin to perform at such a high level with so many members of her friends and family in attendance."
Collectively, Seton Hall shot an impressive 8-over-par, 296, in round one and leads Ohio by three strokes after 18 holes.
"This is exactly the type of effort we've come to expect from our seniors," Doell said. "They're leading by example and showing the type of effort and maturation needed at the top of our lineup. I'm not surprised to see this from them as they've shown this throughout their careers at Seton Hall."
Freshman Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) is one of eight golfers tied for 13th place following a 2-over-par, 74, in round one.
McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) and Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) are currently tied for 59th place following a 7-over-par, 79.
Originally known as the East/West Invitational, Western Michigan will play host to seventeen other teams for the thirteenth straight season in the Rio Verde Collegiate Invitation (March 12- 15). For only the fourth time in the tournament's 13 years of existence will it be played on the White Wing par-72 course which was re-designed by Tom Layman in 2008-2009. The event moved from a 36-hole to a 54-hole format in 2005.
In addition to Seton Hall and host Western Michigan, the field includes ULAR, Toledo, Eastern Michigan, Illinois State, Northern Illinois, Bowling Green, Wichita State, Ball State, Northern Arizona, Xavier, Missouri State, Bradley, Ohio, Akron, Texas A & M - CC.
