HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FL. - Fresh off its victory last weekend, the Seton Hall women's golf team will participate in the Bearcats Spring Classic at the Mission Inn Resort's Los Colinas Golf Course this weekend.
Designed by Gary Koch and built in 1992, Las Colinas (Spanish for "the hills") is an 18-hole championship course that offers quite a different challenge. It is an inland links design with generous, wide-open fairways, gentle rolling hills and large, undulating greens. Las Colinas was nominated as "Best New Resort Course" by Golf Digest in 1992, named "Best Places to Play - 4 stars" by Golf Digest, and has received "Top Fairways" recognition by Golf for Women. Its signature hole is "Alligator Alley", the par 5, 12th hole that spans 493 yards along a tree-lined fairway and requires absolute accuracy from tee-to-green. In all, the course plays to a par-72 and measures 6,225 yards for this event.
In addition to Seton Hall and a pair of teams from host Cincinnati, the Bearcats Spring Classic features 15 other teams including Memphis, Seminole State, Rutgers, Texas A&M, UAB, Winthrop, Northern Illinois, Jacksonville, Southern Mississippi, Central Arkansas, Florida Southern, Florida Atlantic, Bradley, Illinois State and North Dakota State.
The Pirates will bring their entire roster to Florida for the three round event. Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) will tee off at 9:30 a.m. on Friday. Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) will tee off at 9:38 a.m. Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) will tee off at 9:46 a.m. Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) will tee off at 9:54 a.m., and Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) will be the final Pirate to tee off in round one, leaving at 10:02. McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) and Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.) will compete as individuals. Fouse tees off at 7:38 a.m., while Cutter leaves at 7:46 a.m.
The Pirates are coming off a victory last weekend at the Rio Verde Invitational in Arizona. McClure edged Kruse in a playoff to win the individual title and lead the Seton Hall women's golf team to the team championship. Collectively, Seton Hall claimed its seventh tournament title in program history, besting a strong field of 16 other teams, including BIG EAST foe Xavier, which finished 32 strokes behind The Hall. The Pirates shot a 14-over-par, 302, in round three to win the tournament by four strokes over second place Toledo. For the three-day event, the Pirates finished at 32-over-par with a 296-298-302-896.
"We're in a really good place right now both physically and mentally," said head coach Sara Doell. "We're playing really good golf and this event will be another excellent test for us as we draw closer to the BIG EAST Championship."
