KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - Seniors Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) and Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) each fired a 1-over-par, 73, as the Seton Hall women's golf team shot up the team leader board to a 16th place standing with 18 holes remaining at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic.
A day after shooting an uncharacteristic 328, the Pirates shaved 28 strokes off their collective score to finish round two with a 12-over-par, 300, the fifth-best team score on Monday amid the field of 40 teams. Seton Hall is currently 52-over-par with a 328-300-628 and improved 14 places in the standings. The Hall can continue its ascent up the standings in Tuesday's final round as six teams are currently separated by only seven strokes.
I'm really pleased with how we came out today," said head coach Sara Doell. "This is much more indicative of the quality of play we're capable of producing. Even though our scores were down yesterday, their attitudes remained high, so it's not a surprise that we put together a strong round on today."
The College of Charleston is currently the team leader and has a 10 stroke lead over second place Troy.
With the Pirates' strong round, Seton Hall shot past the only BIG EAST competitor it was trailing after round one. Georgetown is currently two strokes behind Seton Hall at 54-over-par, while St. John's is a distant 42 strokes behind The Hall at 96-over-par.
Kruse put together another strong round and is currently tied for 11th among 150 individual golfers. Kruse started on the back nine and was 3-over-par at the turn, but was dominant on the front nine. The senior totaled seven pars and two birdies to finish strong at 1-over for the round. For the tournament, Kruse is 3-over-par with a 74-73-147 and trails Charleston's Laura Fuenfstueck, the individual leader, by six strokes entering Tuesday's final round.
McClure shaved 11 strokes off her first round score to shoot 82 places up the leader board. She used a strong 1-under-par back nine to set the pace for her round. McClure had four birdies on Monday and is currently tied for 59th place. For the tournament, she is 13-over-par, 84-73-157.
Freshman Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) also had a significant improvement on Monday. She shot a 2-over-par, 74, in round two, which was also 11 strokes better than her Sunday score. On hole #17, Pantelas carded an "8" on a par-5, but it was her lone significant blemish. She birdied three holes and bogeyed two others. For the tournament, she is 15-over-par with an 85-74-159.
Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) shaved five strokes off her first round score on Monday. The junior is currently 21-over-par with an 85-80-165.
Rounding out the Pirates' team scoring was Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.), who again struggled, but did improve by two strokes. She is 28-over-par with an 87-85-172.
Competing as an individual, McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) is 15-over-par after two rounds with a 79-80-159.
