HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, FL. - After winning her second career individual title last week, senior Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) shot a 5-over-par, 77, in the opening round of the Bearcats Spring Classic to lead the Seton Hall women's golf team to a third place tie following round one.
McClure is currently tied for 10th among 97 individual golfers and trails the individual leader, Memphis' Emily Goldenstein, by seven strokes with two rounds left to play.
Collectively, the Pirates shot a 24-over-par, 312, in round one and trail Memphis, the team leader, by 14 strokes. Seton Hall is the lone BIG EAST school in the impressive field of 17 programs.
After a disappointing tournament last weekend, Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) had a favorable rebound performance on Friday with a 6-over-par, 78. Among those tied for 19th place with Zabrosky is teammate Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio).
One stroke behind her teammates is senior Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.), who shot a first round, 7-over-par, 79.
Rounding out the team scoring, junior Megan Tendhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) shot an 8-over-par, 80, in round one.
Senior McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) and freshman Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.) are competing as individuals this weekend. Cutter shot a 13-over-par, 85, in round one, while Fouse was two strokes behind at 15-over-par with an 87.
Designed by Gary Koch and built in 1992, Las Colinas (Spanish for "the hills") is an 18-hole championship course that offers quite a different challenge. It is an inland links design with generous, wide-open fairways, gentle rolling hills and large, undulating greens. Las Colinas was nominated as "Best New Resort Course" by Golf Digest in 1992, named "Best Places to Play - 4 stars" by Golf Digest, and has received "Top Fairways" recognition by Golf for Women. Its signature hole is "Alligator Alley", the par 5, 12th hole that spans 493 yards along a tree-lined fairway and requires absolute accuracy from tee-to-green. In all, the course plays to a par-72 and measures 6,225 yards for this event.
In addition to Seton Hall and a pair of teams from host Cincinnati, the Bearcats Spring Classic features 15 other teams including Memphis, Seminole State, Rutgers, Texas A&M, UAB, Winthrop, Northern Illinois, Jacksonville, Southern Mississippi, Central Arkansas, Florida Southern, Florida Atlantic, Bradley, Illinois State and North Dakota State.
