BEDMINSTER, N.J. -- Senior Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) shot a 6-over-par, 78, to lead the Seton Hall women's golf team to a fourth place standing after round one of the Pirate Invitational at Trump National Golf Club on Thursday.
Kruse was consistent throughout her round, leading the Pirates despite very windy conditions on Thursday. The field, as a whole, had difficulty as only one individual shot under par. That individual, Columbia's Camilla Vik has a three-stroke lead on the field at 3-under par. Kruse is currently tied for 16th place overall.
Collectively, Seton Hall shot a 30-over-par, 318, in round one and trails the team leader, Georgia, by 21 strokes. Two other BIG EAST schools are also in the field. The Pirates lead Georgetown by three strokes and St. John's by six strokes entering Friday's final round.
"I'm really proud of how we were able to overcome some difficult playing conditions today," said head coach Sara Doell. "The wind was whipping all round, coupled with the fact that we were playing in front of several members of family and friends, I thought we showed a lot of heart and poise on the course today. We have a nice opportunity to move up tomorrow and have a strong final tune-up before the BIG EAST Championship in two weeks."
Freshman Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) and senior Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) are only one stroke behind Kruse and each shot a 7-over-par, 79. Pantelas rebounded nicely after a rough start that saw her 3-over-par through three holes. She was only 4-over-par over her final 15 holes. McClure was even-par on the front nine, but ran into difficulty on the back.
Junior Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) finished strong, but couldn't overcome a rough front nine. She finished with a 10-over-par, 82, but was only two over on the back nine.
Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio) rounded out Seton Hall's team scoring with a 13-over-par, 85, on Tuesday.
Seton Hall's top round on Tuesday went to a golfer competing as an individual. McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) was consistent throughout her round and finished with a 5-over-par, 77. She is currently tied for 12th place among 70 individuals.
Freshman Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.), also competing as an individual, shot a 15-over-par, 87.
Twelve teams are competing on Trump's "New Course," a par-72, 5,802-yard gem designed and built by Tom Fazio, who has worked closely with Donald Trump as his in-house golf course designer and builder for almost a decade. The New Course literally frames the Old Course, transforming every inch of available land into a handcrafted masterpiece. With a mix of wooded and open spaces and even more elevation changes, The New Course is distinctly different and boasts old school characteristics such as smaller greens and bunkers.
In addition to Seton Hall, participating schools include Boston College, Central Connecticut State University, Columbia University, Georgetown University, University of Georgia, LIU-Brooklyn, University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, Rutgers University, St. John's University and Yale University.
The tournament features two rounds of competition with 18 holes being played on each Thursday and Friday. Five players will play per team, but only the four best scores per round will count.
The Pirate Invitational will wrap up with 18 final holes on Friday. Shotgun is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. Complete results will be available following each round at SHUpirates.com and Golfstat.com.
