Sager Leads Seton Hall After Round One at Rio Verde

RIO VERDE, ARIZ. – Freshman Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) fired a 2-over-par, 74, on Friday to lead the Seton Hall women's golf team to a 13th place tie after round one of the 2017 Rio Verde Invitational.

Sager had three birdies on the round and was even-par on the back nine. After 18 holes, she is tied for eighth among 103 individual golfers. Sager currently trails the individual leader, UMKC's Chandler Gallagher, by five strokes.

Collectively, the Pirates shot a 25-over-par, 313, which is only one stroke greater than their fall season average of 312. The Hall is tied for 13th place with fellow BIG EAST competitor Xavier, and trails the team leader, UMKC, by 18 strokes with two rounds to go.

Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) fired a 6-over-par, 78, in round one and is currently tied for 37th place overall. If it weren't for a triple-bogey on the par-5, 12th hole, Win's end result would have been even more impressive.

Junior Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) finished her first round with an 8-over-par, 80, while classmate Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.) was one stroke behind at 9-over-par.

Rounding out the Pirates' first round scoring was freshman Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.), who carded a 10-over-par, 82.

The Course:
Rio Verde features two traditional-style courses with a soft desert look. They are more Midwestern in style with a lot more grass than one would imagine in a desert setting. When Tom Lehman led the $6 million course renovation project a few years ago, he achieved his vision of creating two uniquely distinct courses, giving members a never-ending variety of golf experiences. Quail Run has all the elements of a traditional golf course, and White Wing plays more like a links course. Common to both courses are meticulously groomed fairways, greens loaded with personality, and outstanding mountain views.Â

The Field:
In addition to Seton Hall and host Western Michigan, the large field is comprised of 17 other teams including: Akron, Arkansas State, Ball State, Bowling Green, Bradley, Central Arkansas, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Illinois State, Missouri State, Northern Illinois, Northern Arizona, Ohio, Arkansas-Little Rock, UMKC, Wichita State and fellow BIG EAST competitor, Xavier.

Tee Times:
The field will play one round on each of three days. The tournament will begin on Friday with a 4:00 PM ET shotgun start. The shotgun start for both Saturday and Sunday is at 11:30 PM.
