Seton Hall will return to action this weekend with a three-game series against LIU-Brooklyn at Owen T. Carroll Field. First pitch for game one of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. ET.
Â
Last weekend, the Pirates dropped two of three games to Connecticut. The Hall was edged by the Huskies on Friday, 2-1, when UConn scored a pair of runs in the top of the eighth inning. Zach Prendergast gave up two earned runs over 7.2 innings in a strong start. On Saturday, the Pirates bounced back with a 3-2 victory. Cullen Dana allowed only a solo home run over 7.2 innings with seven strikeouts to earn the victory. Matt Toke drove in a pair of runs. On Sunday, Seton Hall fell to Connecticut, 4-0, leaving a season-high 15 runners on base.
Â
On Wednesday, the Pirates defeated Princeton, 14-3, Joe Poduslenko hit a grand slam, and Mikael-Ali Mogues had a solo home run to spearhead the Seton Hall offense.
Â
SERIES INFORMATION:
Seton Hall owns a 25-8 all-time series lead over LIU-Brooklyn. Last year, the teams faced each other for the first time in 10 seasons, with the Pirates winning two of three games at Owen T. Carroll Field. Most memorably, was the April 15 game, which was won by the Pirates, 10-0, and Shane McCarthy tossed the first perfect game in both Seton Hall and BIG EAST Conference history. During last year's series, Mike Alescio batted .625 with two triples and a double.
Â
LIU-Brooklyn enters this weekend with a record of 6-10. They're coming off an 11-2 victory over Manhattan on Wednesday. The Jaspers are the only common opponent so far between the teams. Two weeks ago, Seton Hall downed Manhattan twice, 7-2 and 7-3. The Blackbirds were picked to finish sixth in the seven-team Northeast Conference in the preseason coaches poll. They are coming off a 19-35 season in 2016.
Â
THINGS TO KNOW:
DANA HONOR ROLL
Sophomore Cullen Dana was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. Dana allowed only a solo home run over 7.2 innings with seven strikeouts and two walks in a victory over Connecticut on Saturday. A Seton Hall pitcher has now been honored by the BIG EAST in four straight weeks.
Â
HALL TAMES TIGERS
The Pirates offense erupted for a season-high 14 runs in a 14-3 rout of Princeton on Wednesday. Both Mikael-Ali Mogues and Joe Poduslenko hit home runs. Poduslenko had a grand slam and five RBIs as the Pirates improved to 12-10 overall and a perfect 3-0 in mid-week games this season.
Â
PODUSLENKO'S SLAM
Senior Joe Poduslenko hit a grand slam in the fourth inning of Seton Hall's victory over Princeton on Wednesday. Â It's the first Pirate grand slam since Poduslenko hit one against Monmouth on April 19 of last season.
Â
GETTING INVOLVED
In Seton Hall's 14-3 victory over Princeton on Wednesday, several backup players saw action. Junior Chris Talbott had a run-scoring pinch hit single. Senior Nelson Valerio scored his first career run after being hit by a pitch. Freshman Tyler Shedler-McAvoy recorded his first career hit.
Â
PIRATES EDGE UCONN
Seton Hall defeated Connecticut on Saturday, 3-2. Sophomore Cullen Dana allowed only a solo home run over 7.2 innings pitched with seven strikeouts to earn the victory. Matt Toke drove in two of the Pirates' three runs with a pair of RBI singles. Mikael-Ali Mogues led The Hall with three hits.
Â
PRENDY PERFORMS
Senior Zach Prendergast turned in another quality start despite taking the hard-luck loss on Friday against Connecticut. The right-hander allowed only two runs over 7.2 innings with five strikeouts and no walks, but the Pirates fell, 2-1. Prendergast has now recorded four straight "quality" starts.
Â
MOGUES EMERGING
After a slow start to the season, senior Mikael-Ali Mogues has caught fire recently. In the Pirates' last five games, Mogues leads the team with a .400 batting average and has four walks, three doubles and a home run. He also leads the Pirates in on-base percentage and slugging percentage over that period.
Â
REMEMBER WHEN
With LIU-Brooklyn coming to South Orange this weekend, we remember the history that was made last year against the Blackbirds. On Friday, April 15, Shane McCarthy pitched the first perfect game in both Seton Hall and BIG EAST Conference history. McCarthy needed only 88 pitches and struck out eight batters in Seton Hall's 10-0 victory over LIU-Brooklyn. McCarthy is scheduled to start on Sunday.
Â
PATIENT PODUSLENKO
Senior Joe Poduslenko is among the most patient hitters in the country so far this year. He currently leads the BIG EAST with 20 bases on balls this year and leads the Pirates with a .429 on-base percentage.
