2/23/2019 10:49:00 PM | Women's Golf
RIO VERDE, ARIZ. – Junior Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) fired a 2-over-par, 73, to lead the Seton Hall women's golf team to a tie for fifth place with 18 holes left to play at the 2019 Rio Verde Invitational on Saturday.
Win used birdies on three consecutive holes, 13 through 15, to fuel her round and she is currently tied for seventh among 101 individual golfers. She trails Western Michigan's Claire Hernandez by three strokes entering Sunday's final round.
Collectively, the Pirates performed well after being snowed out on Friday. They shot an 18-over-par, 302, on Saturday to tie for fifth place among a large field of 18 competitors. The Hall is only five strokes behind the team leader, Arkansas State. The Pirates' lone BIG EAST competition, Xavier, is currently in third place just three strokes ahead of Seton Hall.
Both Mia Kness (Venetia, Pa.) and Carolina Ronchel Salas (Huelva, Spain) are only two strokes behind Win after a pair of 4-over-par, 75's. Salas was even par over her final 12 holes, while Kness played strong golf throughout, but was hurt by a pair of double-bogeys. They are tied for 16th place overall.
Junior Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) is tied for 55th place after an 8-over-par, 79.
Junior Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.) rounded out The Hall's team scoring. At one point, she had eight straight pars in route to an 11-over-par, 83.
Competing as an individual, freshman Maria Contreras Luna (Estepona, Spain) is tied with Sager following an 8-over-par, 79.
Tournament Details:
RIO VERDE INVITATIONAL
Host: Western Michigan University
Location: Rio Verde, Ariz.
Course: Rio Verde Country Club (Quail Run Course)
Course Vitals: Par-72, 6,215 yards
Dates: February 22-24, 2019, Three Rounds
The Course:
Rio Verde features two traditional-style courses with a soft desert look. They are more Midwestern in style with a lot more grass than one would imagine in a desert setting. When Tom Lehman led the $6 million course renovation project a few years ago, he achieved his vision of creating two uniquely distinct courses, giving members a never-ending variety of golf experiences. Quail Run has all the elements of a traditional golf course, and White Wing plays more like a links course. Common to both courses are meticulously groomed fairways, greens loaded with personality, and outstanding mountain views.
The Field:
In addition to Seton Hall and host Western Michigan, the field is comprised of 16 other teams including: Akron, Arkansas State, Ball State, Bowling Green, Boise State, Bradley, Central Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Illinois State, Little Rock, UMKC, Missouri State, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Wichita State. BIG EAST member Xavier, is also in the large field.
Tee Times:
The field will play one round on each of three days. The tournament will begin on Friday with a 4:00 p.m. ET shotgun start. The shotgun start for both Saturday and Sunday is at 11:30 AM ET.

Live scoring will be available via Golfstat.com. Complete results will also be available following each day's competition at SHUpirates.com.
