South Orange, N.J. — Graduate student Hunter Waldis (Naples, Fla.) had seven strikeouts and allowed only two runs in a five-inning start in game two and the Pirates scored six runs in game one but the Seton Hall baseball team couldn't put together a complete effort as it dropped a doubleheader to St. John's 8-6 in game one and 6-0 in game two.
Waldis' seven strikeouts was a season high for the fifth-year right hander. Junior Jonathan Luders (Lynnfield, Mass.) had two hits on the day for the Pirates.
How It Happened
In game one, St. John's was leading 3-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning but the Pirates would rally in the home half. Senior Justin Scotto (Tinton Falls, N.J.) drew a one-out walk and he moved to second base following a base hit by freshman Michael Callan Moss (Brooklyn, N.Y.). Senior Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) then stepped to the plate sent a base hit into center field that plated Scotto from second and got the Pirates on the board.
The Pirates would then put pressure on the St. John's defense as freshman Jedier Hernandez (Trenton, N.J.) dropped a bunt that was fielded by the pitcher, who bounced the throw to the catcher and allowed Moss to score, cutting the deficit to one, 3-2. There was still only one out with the bases loaded when junior Mark McNelly (Limerick, Pa.) drew a walk that gave him an RBI and tied up the game at 3-3 and junior Devin Hack (Somerville, N.J.) drove in the go-ahead run on a sacrifice fly that made it 4-3 Seton Hall.
However, the Red Storm answered with five runs in the top of the fifth inning that put themselves back in front, 8-4. Sophomore Drew Conover (Pittstown, N.J.) was able to put up zeros in sixth and seventh that gave the Pirates some life heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Luders crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Hack scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Steve Grober (Hillsborough, N.J.) but the Pirates ran out of time in the seven inning game as they fell 8-6.
In game two, Waldis blanked the Red Storm in the top of the first and retired the side in order in the top of the second but St. John's was able to plate two runs in the third to take a 2-0 lead. A two-out single by Grober and a hit by pitch sustained by junior Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) gave Seton Hall two runners on in the fourth but it couldn't score a run. It turned out to be their best scoring chance of the day as the Red Storm rode a strong start to a 6-0 win.
