The Bronx, N.Y. - Sophomore Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) went 2-for-4 with a home run, a double and three RBI but the Seton Hall baseball team couldn't hold off Fordham as the Rams came from behind to defeat the Pirates, 11-8, Sunday afternoon at Houlihan Park.
Sophomore Jedier Hernandez (Trenton, N.J.) and graduate student Alex Clyde (Old Tappan, N.J.) both tallied multi-hit games for The Hall (8-12). Junior Richie Cimpric (Bayport, N.Y.) tossed 2.2 innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen but it was three errors by the Seton Hall defense that plagued the Pirates.
How It Happened
Eight runs combined were scored between the two teams as Seton Hall got on the scoreboard first thanks to a fielder's choice RBI by junior Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) in the top of the first. Fordham answered with two runs in the home to jump in front, 2-1, but the Pirates knotted up the score at 2-2 in the top of the second where an RBI single down the right field line off the bat of redshirt junior Will Gale (Scotch Plains, N.J.) scored junior Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.).
As it did in the games on Friday at Mike Sheppard, Sr. Stadium, Fordham used the long ball to its advantage. A solo home run broke the tie and a sacrifice fly later on in the inning made it 4-2 Fordham. A two-run home run for the Rams in the bottom of the third extended their lead to 6-2. Starter Cole Hansen (Skillman, N.J.) worked a scoreless fourth inning before the Pirates started to chip away at the deficit. Redshirt junior Oscar Murray (Brentwood, Calif.) was hit by a pitch to lead off the top of the fifth and D'Amico was the next batter to the plate. D'Amico went with an outside pitch and sent it over the fence in right center field for a two-run home run, trimming the Fordham lead to 6-4.
Cimpric retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth and induced a double play in the sixth to keep the Rams off the board. It remained a two-run game heading into the top of the eighth where an RBI single by Clyde and a run-scoring bunt single from Hack tied up the score at 6-6. With two outs and runners on first and second, Murray stepped to the plate and rove a pitch back up the middle and Clyde came around to score from second, giving Seton Hall a 7-6 lead. D'Amico stayed hot and helped extend the lead to 8-6 thanks to an RBI double to left field on the first pitch of the at-bat.
However, Fordham once again used timely hitting and capitalized on Seton Hall's mistakes to post a crooked number in the home half of the eighth as the Rams crossed the plate five times to take a commanding 11-8 lead.
