Miami, Fla. -- The bats once again came to play for the Seton Hall baseball team, defeating FIU 13-10 in the second of their four-game series in Miami.
Ryan Reich (Selinsgrove, Pa.) was dominant on the mound, picking up the win and punching out a career-high 11 batters. Today marked the third straight game the Pirates have scored 12-plus runs and the seventh game of the season where they scored 10-plus runs this season.
How It Happened
The Pirates got on the board in the first inning. Max Viera (Greenwood Lake, N.Y.) got on base with a lead-off double and Danny Melnick (Hamilton, N.J.) brought him home to make it a 1-0 game.
Seton Hall put up four more runs in the second inning. Andrew Bianco (Kings Park, N.Y.) and Casey Cumsikey (Milltown, N.J.) got back-to-back singles then both moved into scoring position after a passed ball. Kyle Lyons (West Chester, Pa.) brought Bianco home with an RBI single. Viera had a two-RBI single, and Staus Pokrovsky (Pittsgrove, N.J.) added another RBI to make it 5-0. Reich followed the four-run inning up by striking out the side in the home half.
Kishon Frett got the Panthers on the board with a solo home run, one of two earned runs Reich surrendered in his start.
In the fourth and fifth innings, the Pirates added six more runs. Cumsikey had a leadoff home run to start the fourth and Zack Sylvester (Montville, N.J.) had a two-RBI single with two outs to make it 8-2 after the fourth.
Cumiskey recorded an RBI in back-to-back innings after smart base running by Pat D'Amico (Lynnfield, Mass.) made it runners on third with only one out. Lyons, Viera and Pokrovsky got a mini two-out rally going, adding two more runs before the end of the fifth and extending the lead to double-digits.
FIU tried to stage a rally after trailing 12-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning. The Panthers scored five runs in the seventh inning to make it 12-7, then added three more runs in the eighth to make it a 12-10 game.
Seton Hall added an insurance run in the ninth inning thanks to a Sylvester RBI single to make it a 13-10 game entering the bottom of the ninth. Michael Gillen (Rochelle Park, N.J.) in his second inning of work walked the first batter in the ninth but then proceeded to retire the side.
