LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Senior Sarah Osmun (Crystal Lake, Ill.) broke the Seton Hall career record for kills as the volleyball team stunned Louisville on Sunday, 3-2 (25-20, 25-21, 19-25, 17-25, 15-13). The win was the first-ever by the Pirates (6-11, 1-1) against the Cardinals (6-5, 1-1), who were picked second in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches' Poll.
Osmun finished the day with a game-high 21 kills, bringing her career total to 1,384, five better than the previous mark set by Jennifer Cheshire in 1997. She broke the record with her first kill in the fifth set.
Junior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) posted 14 kills, 11 digs and four aces, while sophomore Hannah Hugeback (Virginia Beach, Va.) had 13 kills and 11 digs. Leading all players were sophomore Olivia Trudeau (Shell Beach, Calif.) with 47 assists and freshman Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) with 13 digs. Anastasia Artemeva paced Louisville with 16 kills.
The Pirates roared out of the gate in set one, grabbing a 7-2 lead after a kill by Matusiak. The Cardinals got no closer than three the remainder of the way, and Osmun and Hugeback finished the set off with points to give the Hall a 25-20 win and the early lead in the match.
Set two yielded another quick start, with a kill by Osmun and an ace from Matusiak making it 8-4 in favor of Seton Hall. Louisville responded with five straight to take a one-point lead, but a service error followed by a kill from Hugeback put the Pirates back in front. With the set tied at 13, Matusiak put the Hall ahead once again with a point, and consecutive attack errors from the Cardinals made it a three-point game. Louisville charged back to get within 20-19, but Osmun and Hugeback answered, and Trudeau closed a 5-2 run with a kill to give the Pirates 25-21 win and a 2-0 lead.
The Cardinals put together late runs in sets three and four to even the match, forcing the decisive fifth frame.
After falling behind 4-1, Osmun capped a mini-run with a kill that gave Seton Hall a 5-4 lead. After twice stretching the lead to three, the Pirates allowed Louisville to even the match up at 10 on a point from Artemeva. An error by Matusiak made it 12-11 in favor of the Cardinals, but she came right back with a kill before teaming up with sophomore Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) for a block to put the Hall back ahead. Louisville tied it at 13, but Osmun answered with a huge kill, and a ball-handling error by Gosia Lech sealed the victory for the Pirates.
Seton Hall hosts West Virginia on Oct. 2 and 2:00 p.m., followed by a noon start against Pittsburgh on Oct. 3.
