SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Sophomore Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) broke the Seton Hall single-match dig record after racking up 45 digs in 3-2 (25-19, 25-19, 17-25, 18-25, 15-8) win over Boston College on Friday night. The Pirates (7-5) will wrap up the Seton Hall Invitational with a 2:00 p.m. contest against TCU on Saturday, September 17.
Warren broke a 21-year old record previously held by Laura Romeika, who posted 41 digs against Connecticut on October 30, 1990.
Senior Meghan Matusiak (Winfield, Ill.) posted a double-double with 23 kills and 11 digs. Freshman Shelbey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) handed out a career-best 46 assists to go with 17 digs.
After a slow start, SHU found its rhythm and went on an 8-2 run to take a 17-15 advantage. The teams would trade the next several points before a kill by Matusiak and a Krissy Wrobel (Reading, Pa.) block set up a pair of service aces by Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) gave the Pirates a 25-19 victory.
Set two started the same way with the Eagles racing out to an early 12-8 advantage. With Kalie Marshall (North Royalton, Ohio) serving, the Pirates rallied for five in a row to hold a one-point margin. BC eventually evened things up at 18-18, but Seton Hall responded swiftly on a Meghan Bonk (Hockessin, Del.) score to spearhead a mini 4-0 spurt to put the set out of reach.
In the third and fourth sets, slow starts doomed the Pirates once again. Only this time they could not muster up a comeback and the Eagles forced a fifth set.
Seton Hall finally got off on the right foot in the deciding frame, jumping out to a 5-1 lead. Boston College cut the deficit to three points, but that was as close as they would be able to get and the Pirates picked up the win.
