ITHACA, N.Y. - The Seton Hall women's volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak with a convincing three-set sweep, 3-0 (25-20, 25-15, 25-14), of host Cornell Saturday in its second match of the Cornell Invitational.
Seton Hall (5-6) dominated from the start as the Pirates registered an attack percentage of at least .241 in all three sets, while limiting the Big Red to less than .070 for all three sets.
The Hall used a complete team effort as no individual Pirate stood out with a significant statistical output. The Pirates edged Cornell in all major categories including kills, assists, digs and blocks.
Turning Point:
Trailing 15-13 in set one, Seton Hall scored four of the next five points, and a kill by Sara Connell (Dousman, Wis.) gave the Pirates a 17-16 lead. The Hall never trailed again in the set. With the score tied at 20, the Pirates scored five straight points to win set one, 25-20.
After Cornell took a brief 2-1 lead early in set two, The Hall scored four straight points and never trailed again in the match.
Numbers & Notes:
- Senior Amanda Hansen (Pewaukee, Wis.) led The Hall with a match-high 10 kills.
- Connell obliterated her previous career-high of 10 assists with 23 assists today. She also matched her career-high with seven digs.
- Freshman Abby Thelen (Ft. Mitchell, Ky.) had a strong match with eight kills and a team-best .600 attack percentage.
- Senior Kacey Richards (Macedon, N.Y.) matched a career-high with seven kills and only one attack error. She also blocked a career-high three attacks.
- Hansen's four blocks today move her into fourth place on Seton Hall's career list with 416.
- This was the fifth match all-time between Seton Hall and Cornell. The Pirates improve to 4-1 in those matches.
- September 19 is national "Talk Like a Pirate Day." Seton Hall improves to 9-2 on this day. Me thinks its a good record.
