Pirates Tied for Second Place at Low Country
3/18/2017 7:23:00 PM | Women's Golf
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. – Freshman Sammie Staudt (Coatesville, Pa.) fired a 6-over-par, 78, in the opening round of the 2017 Low Country Intercollegiate on Saturday and has the Seton Hall women's golf team tied for second.
Staudt is currently tied for ninth place among 96 individual golfers and trails Presbyterian College's Celia Mansour by five strokes for the individual lead entering Sunday's final round.
Collectively, the all five Pirates played well. They are tied for second with High Point, Quinnipiac and USC Upstate, and trail the team leader, Dalton State, by just one stroke with 18 holes left to play. The Hall shot a 32-over-par, 320 in round one.
No other BIG EAST schools are in the field, but the Pirates play this event in Hilton Head to accustom themselves to the climate and style of course in preparation for the BIG EAST Championship. The conference's marquee event will be played at nearby Callawassie Island next month.
Junior Macky Fouse (Aliquippa, Pa.) finished her first round only one stroke behind Staudt. She is tied for 12th place overall with a 7-over-par, 79.
Junior Cassie Pantelas (Canton, Ohio) fired a 9-over-par, 81, in the opening round, while both Maddie Sager (Phoenixville, Pa.) and Lizzie Win (Sylvania, Ohio) shot a 10-over-par, 82.
The Course:
Golf at Moss Creek is some of the finest in all of the Low Country, with its two championship courses, Devils Elbow South and Devils Elbow North. Both courses were Fazio-designed more than 30 years ago, with the intention of making the game challenging for the low handicap golfers, as well as fair and playable to the higher handicap golfers.
Both of these courses are truly hidden treasurers. There is a real beauty to each of them as you ride or walk down the fairways. Each course is lined with magnificent oak trees and tall airy pines, with strategically-placed sand traps, large ponds and water tributaries, and last but not least are the salt marshes which change twice daily with the tides. All this beauty, and there is still more! While you are playing your round of golf you may see alligators sunning on the banks, or you might spot an egret or hawk, or even an eagle swooping down to snatch a fish out of one of the many ponds, and on occasion you could see a family of wild turkeys scampering across a fairway trying to avoid a barrage of tee shots coming down on them.
For the purposes of the Low Country Intercollegiate, the golf course will play a par of 72 over 5,922 yards.
The Field:
In addition to Seton Hall and host Wofford College, the large field includes 15 other schools, Appalachian State, Bethune Cookman, Bucknell, The Citadel, Dalton State, Gardner-Webb, High Point, Longwood, Navy, Presbyterian, Quinnipiac, SCAD Savannah, USC Beauford and USC Upstate.
Tee Times:
The field will play 18 holes on both Saturday and Sunday. Both days of competition will begin with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. ET.
