SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) had a grand slam and five RBIs as the Seton Hall baseball team downed Princeton, 14-3, on Wednesday.
The game turned into a rout late, but was close early on. The Pirates got on the scoreboard first with a solo home run to deep left-center field by senior Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) leading off the bottom of the second inning.
Princeton took a 2-1 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning off Seton Hall starter Chris Morris (Matawan, N.J.), but the Pirates bounced back with a pair of runs of their own in the bottom of the third. Junior Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) led off with a double to right field and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Poduslenko. Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) walked with two outs, stole second base, advanced to third base on a wild pitch, and then scored on another wild pitch to give The Hall a 3-2 lead.
Turning Point:
With the Pirates clinging to a one-run lead, the Pirates broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, Princeton walked the bases full. Poduslenko followed with his team-leading third home run of the season to deep left-center field to give The Hall a 7-2 advantage.
Inside the Numbers:
- Morris allowed two earned runs over four innings with a season-high seven strikeouts in a no decision.
- Sophomore Billy Layne Jr. (Cliffwood Beach, N.J.) earned the victory with three innings of relief. He allowed one unearned run and struck out four batters with no walks.
- Poduslenko went 2-for-5 with a home run, a stolen base a run scored and five RBIs.
