SAN FRANCISCO – Seton Hall women's volleyball Assistant Coach Simone Asque was named one of only six coaches nationwide to receive a prestigious Pac-12 Diversity Mentorship.
Â
The purpose of the Diversity Mentorship Program is to educate and prepare the next generation of minority coaches through access and hands-on experience with Pac-12 coaches, who recognize that there is a need for a more diverse coaching pool in the sport within the Conference and across the country.
Â
Asque was one of six mentees selected for the program from an applicant pool that was consisted of minority graduating seniors or coaches who are early in their careers, passionate about coaching women's volleyball, and interested in getting experience at the highest collegiate level, with special consideration given to student-athletes from Pac-12 schools or HBCUs.
Â
Asque has been paired with Stanford head coach Kevin Hambly. "We are so excited to get to work with Simone," Hambly said. "I was fortunate enough to be on the committee to choose the mentees and I was really excited when we decided that I would be paired with her. She's got great energy, is extremely bright, and has a great future in coaching."
Â
Elements of the Diversity Mentorship Program will include seasonal trips to Pac-12 campuses for in-person training as well as regular meetings with assigned coaching staffs and program administrators, six live-lesson and discussion sessions with True North Sports' leadership development, and AVCA membership and educational and diversity programming at the organization's annual convention. The mentees will serve in non-coaching capacities, and all elements will be funded through Pac-12 coaching staffs as well as donations from friends of Pac-12 women's volleyball programs.
Â
"I was elated to see this initiative emerge from the Pac-12 Conference and hope that programs of this nature will continue to promote inclusivity in the sport of volleyball," Asque said. "I am humbled to be selected, but felt confident going through the application and interview process for this opportunity from the knowledge I have gained from Coach Yaeger, my role within the Seton Hall Athletics Department, and the master's degree in Sports Psychology I am currently earning at Seton Hall as well.  I look forward to incorporating the additional insight I will gain to better serve the Seton Hall community and our Pirate Volleyball program. Coach Hambly and his staff at Stanford University have already been extremely welcoming and I cannot wait to absorb as much as I can during my time as a mentee!"
Â
A 2012 graduate of the University of Virginia, Asque was a three-time All-ACC honoree as a volleyball student-athlete. After brief coaching stints at Illinois-Chicago, NJIT and Coastal Carolina, Asque found a home in South Orange where she has been a Pirates assistant coach since February of 2018. Over the past three years, she has established herself as one of the "up-and-coming" talented young coaches in the profession.
