MORGANTOWN, W.Va.— The Seton Hall women’s soccer team fell to #21 West Virginia, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The loss puts Seton Hall’s record at 6-4-2 and 2-3 in the BIG EAST while West Virginia improves to 6-3-3 and 3-1-1 in the BIG EAST. Junior co-captain Katie Herr (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) scored the lone goal for the Pirates.
The Pirates got off to a quick start, scoring the first goal of the game 14 minutes into play. After a pass through the middle from sophomore Ashley Reinecke (Toms River, N.J.), Herr put it into the back of the net to put the Pirates up 1-0. The Mountaineers tied it up three minutes later with a goal by Natalie Cocchi. The remainder of the half was a battle of the midfield, until with 27 seconds remaining, West Virginia would take the lead with off a goal by Ashley Banks.
Each team would have scoring opportunities in the second half, yet the Mountaineers offense dominated the majority of the time, having out-shot the Pirates 10-2. The Pirates defense held strong, but West Virginia sealed the game with four minutes remaining in the half to win 3-1.
Pirate goalkeeper Amanda Becker (Aston, Pa.) tallied six saves.
Seton Hall will host BIG EAST opponent DePaul on Friday, Oct. 7. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at Owen T. Carroll field.
