SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.— The Seton Hall women’s soccer team tied DePaul, 2-2 on a rainy Friday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll field. The tie puts Seton Hall’s record at 6-4-3 and 2-3-1 in the BIG EAST while DePaul’s record stands at 2-6-4 and 0-3-3 in the BIG EAST. Junior co-captain Katie Herr (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and senior Mary Ronau (Gales Ferry, Conn.) each tallied a goal for the Pirates.
The Pirates got off to a quick start, scoring the first goal of the game 14 minutes into play. After a cross from sophomore Kathy De Tata (Brick, N.J.), Herr fired a shot from 18 yards out that swept underneath the cross bar in the upper right hand corner to put the Pirates up 1-0. The Blue Demons added a goal of their own six minutes later when Jen Lee and Dominque Locascio assisted on an Amy Witt goal to tie it up at one. The rest of the half remained scoreless.
Ten minutes into the second half, junior Beth Troutman (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick where Ronau converted the penalty kick to put the Pirates up 2-1. DePaul again tied it up, with a Margo Sackmaster goal at the 71 minute mark. Both teams had chances for the go-ahead goal, but couldn’t convert and the game went into overtime.
The overtimes were evenly played, with both teams having scoring opportunities. Senior forward Oriana Nierojewski (Burlington, Ontario) was a playmaker for the Pirates, where she was able to cross the ball to the middle numerous times, yet the Pirates couldn’t capitalize and the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
Seton Hall out-shot DePaul, 12-11, and dominated on corner kicks, 8-4, yet committed 16 offsides penalties. Four yellow cards were issued at the game, along with one red card. Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Becker (Aston, Pa.) posted two saves in the contest.
Seton Hall will host BIG EAST opponent Notre Dame on Sunday, Oct. 9. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. at Owen T. Carroll field.
