SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.—In its first home game of the season, the Seton Hall women’s soccer team (0-1-1) tied Delaware (1-0-1) 1-1 after two overtime periods on Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. The lone goal for the Pirates was tallied by junior Aubrey Ellzey (San Jose, Calif.) off an assist by sophomore Alli Donofrio (Wayne, N.J.) in the second period.
Despite having out shot Delaware 12-6 in the first half, Seton Hall was unable to hit the back of the net. Seton Hall's closest chance to scoring came with 1:30 remaining in the half, where junior Meagan DeWan (Mahwah, N.J.) blasted a shot from 12 yards out, but the shot bounced off the crossbar and the half ended scoreless.
The Pirates looked to carry the momentum into the second half, but Delaware knocked one in at the 49 minute mark by freshman Caitlyn Germain to put the Blue Hens up 1-0. Seton Hall then dominated, with much of the action taking place in the offensive end. At the 70 minute mark, Ellzey snuck the ball into the left side of the net off a beautiful cross from Donofrio to tie it up 1-1. Seton Hall dominated the rest of the half, but could not score again by the end of regulation.
In the first overtime period, the Pirates dominated, posting four shots while holding the Blue Hens to none. Seton Hall had many opportunities, with Donofrio again feeding into the middle to junior Katie Herr (Mechanicsburg, Pa.), but the shot went just wide five minutes left. With two minutes remaining, sophomore Kristen Ponichtera (Syracuse, N.Y.) almost knocked in the game winning goal, but it bounced off the post. The second overtime was a battle of the defense, as both teams did not have many offensive opportunities and the game ended in a 1-1 tie.
Seton Hall outshot Delaware 23-13. Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Becker (Aston, Pa.)posted five saves for the Pirates.
The Pirates will host Saint Peter’s on Tuesday, Aug. 30. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. at Owen T. Carroll Field.
