ANNAPOLIS, Md.— In the final game of the US Naval Academy Invitational, the Seton Hall women’s soccer team tied Navy 2-2 on Sunday afternoon at Glen Warner Soccer Facility. Junior co-captain Katie Herr (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) and junior Rita Massot (Glen Ridge, N.J.) led SHU, scoring one goal apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Becker (Aston, Pa.) recorded 10 saves for the Pirates.
Despite Navy getting on the board first with a goal by Maggie Curran at the 24 minute mark, the Pirates responded a minute later with a goal of their own to tie the game at one. Herr shot from the right side of the box to put the ball over the goalkeepers head and into the back of the net. The rest of the first half remained scoreless with the game tied at one.
The Pirates took the lead at 77:23 when Massot took advantage of the Navy goalkeeper out of position and put the ball in the back of the net off an assist from freshman Sheri Ferron (Brookfield, Wis.), to make the score 2-1. The Pirates looked to hold the edge, but with three minutes left in regulation, Navy’s Lauren Griebel tied it up at two.
In the two overtime periods, the Pirates defense held strong as Navy dominated in shots 6-2. SHU was unable to put the ball in the back of the net as the game ended in a 2-2 tie.
The Pirates were out-shot by the Mids 22-11.
Seton Hall will kick off its conference schedule on Friday, Sep. 16, where they will travel to BIG EAST rival Rutgers. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
