PISCATAWAY, N.J.—On a muggy Friday evening at Yurcak field, the Seton Hall women’s soccer team defeated Rutgers, 1-0, in the first BIG EAST conference game for both teams. The win puts Seton Hall’s record at 5-1-2 and 1-0 in the BIG EAST record and drops Rutgers to 2-4 and 0-1 BIG EAST. Senior Mary Ronau (Gales Ferry, Conn.) scored the game winning goal nine minutes into play.
The Pirates scored the first goal of the game at the nine minute mark. After a misplay by the Rutgers goalkeeper, SHU was awarded a corner kick where Ronau one-timed the ball into the back of the net by the far post to put the Pirates up 1-0. The rest of the first half was a battle of the midfields as both teams posted only one shot.
Despite a scoreless second half, both teams had opportunities but couldn’t capitalize. Rutgers put the offensive pressure on, with the ball in the Pirates’ defensive side the majority of the half. Pirate goalkeeper Amanda Becker (Aston, Pa.) came up with big defensive plays, intercepting key crosses and stopping Rutgers’ offensive drives. She was credited with three saves.
Seton Hall will next face Villanova on Friday, Sept. 23 at Noon on Owen T. Carroll field. The game will be the first of a double header when the men’s soccer team will take on Rutgers at 3:00 p.m.
