SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Seton Hall women's soccer red-shirt freshman Stephanie Soma (Franklin, Mass.) tallied the only goal in the 44th minute to give the Pirates a, 1-0, victory over Montreal Saturday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field. The win was the Pirates second of the preseason.
Senior Kaitlyn Rogers (Parker, Colo.) picked up the ball just beyond mid field, and fed a lead pass through two Montreal defenders to Soma who beat goalkeeper Catherine Cadieux above the left shoulder.
The goal was all the Pirates would need as they allowed only three shots, all turned aside by first half goalkeeper Jennifer Pettigrew (Kearny, N.J.).
Montreal's best chance to score came in the 39th minute. Emilie Mercier received a corner kick from Veronique Maranda in the middle of the box. Mercier's first shot hit the post and the rebound shot off Mercier was saved by Pirates goalkeeper Jennifer Pettigrew and cleared out of danger by the defense. It would be Montreal's last shot on goal.
The Hall finished with 22 fouls to Montreal's 16, including a yellow card for each squad. Montreal held the edge in corner kicks 4-3.
Cadieux faced seven shots turning aside three.
The Pirates return to action for their third and final exhibition game Monday evening against Delaware. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m. at Owen T. Carroll Field.
