SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall women's soccer team recorded 16 total shots, but it was Providence (8-2-1, 2-1-1) who made their shot count as the Friars defeated the Pirates, 1-0, Friday evening at Owen T. Carroll Field.
The game started with two strong scoring chances, including an open look 25 yards away by Katie Ritter (Hagerstown, Md.) in the 24th minute, but Friar goalkeeper Jill Schott leaped to knock the ball high over the cross bar.
One minute later, Amanda Webster split two Pirate defenders and took a shot that was tipped by Jennifer Pettigrew (Kearny, N.J.). With the ball was trickling towards the empty net, Taylor Mims (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Webster raced to it with Mims sliding to block the rebound shot by Webster. Lindsey Trubia caught up to the loose ball and kicked it into Mims who was guarding the open net.
Webster, however, made her next chance count in the 37th minute when she dribbled the ball past her defender and beat a sliding Pettigrew to the right side for her fifth goal of the year.
Despite a scoreless second half, the Pirates (6-5, 2-2) threatened with 12 total shots forcing Schott to make three saves. Of the 12 shots, Nicki Gross (Emerson, N.J.) looked to score the tying goal in the 87th minute when her shot from 20 yards sailed passed the right post. In the final seconds, Gross again had a look from 17 yards, but shot the ball just above the crossbar.
The Pirates return to Owen T. Carroll Field for match against Connecticut on Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
