SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Connecticut used a first half goal and two more six minutes apart in the second half to defeat the Seton Hall women's soccer team, 3-0, Sunday afternoon at Owen T. Carroll Field.
Angelika Johansson scored her fourth and fifth goals of the year and added an assist for Connecticut (6-5-2, 2-2-1). She struck in the 18th minute when her kick was initially slowed by a sliding Jennifer Pettigrew (Kearny, N.J.) but trickled toward the empty-net in which no defender could reach in time. Her second tally was in the 63rd minute when Jessica Shufelt crossed a pass from the left side finding Johansson alone in the box. In the 69th minute it was Elise Fugowski who picked up Johansson's rebound for her first of the year.
The Pirates were unable to score despite 13 total shots, including Ashley Clarke (Paramus, N.J.) hitting the post in the 86th minute. Amy Ruhe (Monrovia, Md.) led all Pirates with four total shots, two on goal.
Jessica Dulski played 72 minutes and teammate Ally Mancino recorded 18 minutes to combine for the shutout with two saves apiece. Despite the loss, Pettigrew made eight saves.
The Pirates will travel west next weekend for a match at Notre Dame on Friday at 6:30 p.m. followed by a match on Sunday at DePaul at noon.
