The Pirates trailed 3-0 heading into the second half when Cherup scored to get the offense back on track. Junior midfielder Amie Ruhe (Monrovia, Md.) fed Cherup with a through pass into the box that she quickly sent past Fordham goalkeeper Rachel Suther to the far right post to cut the SHU deficit to just 3-1.
Seton Hall saw several more strong scoring chances in the second half, with senior Stephanie Soma's (Franklin, Mass.) header off a cross in the 89th minutes representing one of the Pirates' best chances to score.
The Pirates nearly found themselves with a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute if not for an exceptional save from Fordham starting goalkeeper Ally White. Soma had a strong scoring chance in the middle of the box but was unable to turn and make a clean shot on net, instead getting the ball outside to junior midfielder Ashley Clarke (Paramus, N.J.).
Clarke came up the left side and fired a hard shot on net, but White punched the ball away to keep Seton Hall off the scoreboard.
All three of Fordham's goals came over a span of just 3:38, and all three of the strikes were unassisted with two coming off deflections. In the 27th minute Kristina Maksuti took advantage of a deflection in the box to score from just a few yards out on the right side to give the Rams a 1-0 lead.
Three minutes later Annie Worden took advantage of a Seton Hall turnover to score from the right side and 77 seconds after that Maria Swift cleaned up a deflection off a blocked shot near the top of the box to wrap up the scoring.
Seton Hall starting goalkeeper Alyssa Kelly (Southampton, N.J.) made a pair of saves in the first half, while freshman Gina Maiorana (Street, Md.) played the second half, turning away four shots without giving up a goal.
Soma and Cherup were very active on the offensive end, with the senior registering a team-high three shots, while Cherup pushed the action offensively throughout the second half of play.
Seton Hall will officially open its 2012 season on Friday, Aug. 17, when the Pirates host Long Island University at Owen T. Carroll Field in South Orange, N.J., starting at 7 p.m.
